I would like to express my appreciation to Shihan Jeff Ellis

Jim Mattey

Early in 2012, my wife and I were looking for an activity outside of traditional sports that would allow our son, Eric, an opportunity to improve his physical abilities.  After several discussions, we decided that martial arts would provide him with the essential areas that a child needs to develop control over themselves, both mentally and physically.  Researching the various options in the area soon led us to the Jeff Ellis International Karate Center in Avon Lake and my wife scheduled an initial meeting to learn more about the program.  During that discussion, Shihan Ellis demonstrated his commitment to providing a traditional approach that focuses on instilling discipline and building confidence in the students of the dojo.  We registered Eric and he began classes in early June 2012.
Initially, I took Eric to class and watched the sessions.  However, Eric quickly convinced me to take advantage of one of the specials that Shihan offered which allowed the parents to join the class for a free trial period.  By the beginning of July, I was participating with Eric and soon thereafter registered as an official student in the dojo.
Martial arts training has been a very beneficial experience for both of us.  Physically, we have seen significant improvement in our balance, flexibility, coordination, strength, and speed.  Mentally, our discipline, focus, and confidence have increased and these gains carry over into other areas of our lives.    While not an aggressive person, Eric’s confidence is now to the point where we see him carry himself differently.  He is secure in the knowledge that if the situation called for it, he would be able to diffuse or overcome an encounter.  This ability and security will increase as he continues his training going forward.
As an adult there is very little, if any, chance that I will find myself in a potentially threatening situation.  That isn’t why I am studying the martial arts.  For me, the biggest benefit by far is the opportunity to spend time and develop this skill together with my son.  It has been very rewarding to watch him progress through the belt ranks and mature into a confident, disciplined, and capable person.  On behalf of Eric and myself, I would like to express my appreciation to Shihan, the Senseis, Sempais, and fellow students for providing the opportunity to continue to develop ourselves and study the martial arts.
